does the description sound like the rumored 'barton fink' sequel the coens mentioned sometime back? i distinctly remember them saying something about writing a story about barton when he was older as a college professor in the '60s. i also remember them saying that they wanted john turturro to age properly, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
anyways, anyone else remember this?
Yeah, it was going to be called
Old Fink. I don't know whether they every got as far as writing a script - you never know with the Coens, they seem to be very productive writers and always have scripts hanging around. This new film did ring that bell for me, although it sounds a little different - the idea for the Fink sequel was that Barton would've become this guru figure to the 1960s counterculture - but the concept could've changed a lot since I last heard about it.
In any case, I'd love to see the Coens' take on the 1960s - they've done films set in every decade since the 1920s except for the 1960s and the 1970s. And I'm delighted that they're going through one of their prolific patches - at the start of this decade we had four Coen films in four years, now it looks like we could have as many as three inside 18 months.
