 Post subject: Years ago, when I worked at a video store . . .

. . .I recommended this movie to anyone who asked about it. They all were very angry with me and rarely asked my opinion again. Nobody liked it. One guy returned it a mere 1 hour after leaving the store. You figure it took him 10 minutes to get home and 10 to come back to the store - he got all of 30-40 minutes into it.

I saw BF with a good friend when it opened in theaters. We were the only ones in a 75% full theater who saw the brilliance. Everyone else was confused. Not just by the movie but by how it won the Palme d'Or (did I spell that right).

Barton Fink is ace. I was freaked out by it the first time I watched it, didn't know what to make of it but it's a grower.

BF was so full of subtleties that left it open for vast interpretation. i've read three different interpretations of the film as a whole. (including one where each scene was analyzed and it was determined that half of the movie was made up of dream sequences). if you read them, all three of them work, and that's i think is where the brilliance lies.

you have to be willing to pay attention to really like the movie.
