Call me crazy but there are a couple of scenes from movies that I know (or at the very least suspect) that influenced the Coens while making Blood Simple.

1.) The Woman Who Knew Too Much-Mario Bava
This horror movie ends with a person trapped behind a locked door and as he shoots his gun, the bullets pierce the door as rays of light shine through to the dark room outside. (I've been told this is where the Coens got the idea for the scene where Visser shoots through the wall of Abby's apartment).

2.) Blade Runner - Ridley Scott
When Roy Batty punches his hand through the wall and grabs Deckards hands and then breaks two of his fingers. More than a coincidence that Visser punch the wall and reaches inside to remove the knife trapping his other hand on the window sill. Also this movie came out just a few years before Blood Simple and also starred...M. Emmet Walsh who plays Visser in Blood Simple.

And let's not forget that Abby breaks Marty's finger in a similar way as well (not that there are a myriad of ways--but she does more than just kick him in the nuts!)

Are there any others?

Couldn't agree more! As happenstance would have it I watched Blade Runner last night and thought that myself. Also, on the extra features is a 3.5hr making of doc with some interviews conducted recently and M. Emmet sure is looking old

Great minds think alike. I didn't realize it myself until I too was sitting in the theater recently watching the re-release of Blade Runner here in Westwood (LA) and that scene came on and I thought well heck, there you go...

Quick someone put M. Emmet Walsh in a movie before he expires!

I read that the Coens were inspired to use Walsh after they saw him in a movie from the 70's called 'Straight Time". I highly recommend this movie as Walsh plays a real bastard...
