In the past I've read that the Coens aren't interested in making a sci-fi film because they find space too sterile.

I would bloody love to see a Coen vision of the future, it would be a dystopian joy!

Dystopian joy: oxymoron? Maybe...

And yes, I shall be seeing NCFOM at least once when it's released.

Don't know if this topic can be regarded as Latest News???

Uh, Moderator?--hahaha...

But seriously I think The Coens' movies are set in the real world but employ dreams and sometimes a dream-like logic whereas SCi-Fi movies are like making the dream itself if that makes sense. Sci-Fi are usually pure fantasy--so I think the Coens tend to utilize fantasy in a minimal/subversive way.

The best example I can give is the films of Terry Gilliam. His film Brazil, like most of his films are set in a fantastical world while The Fisher King was grounded in reality with fantasy elements. I just think the Coens really thrive in the latter. The only time I think they truly ventured into the Fantastical World is for "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" but that was very much rooted in American History. Maybe "The Hudsucker Proxy" is another example of a fantastical world but once again, they use very familiar sign posts to make the story more relatable.

It's like picturing David Lynch doing a Sci-Fi movie. I just can't see it--except maybe "Eraserhead" which is the closest thing to a dream-like post-apocalyptic film. I think the Coens are closer to David Lynch than anyone else. Barton Fink anyone? But I digress...

Hey moviemaker, there IS a moderator- me ;-) Maybe I'll have some moderating to do one day ;-)

Anyhoo, I think a Coen Sci-fi movie would be awesome but I dunno if it would ever happen. As thirdcoen says, they've said they're not interested in it. Maybe one day, who knows?
